Grey’s Anatomy and Abortion law in Idaho

In case you weren’t already convinced the writing team of Grey’s Anatomy are completely sold out for politically left-wing talking points, season 19 episode 05 “When I get to the boarder” provides yet more evidence.

In this episode Addison and Bailey are sent across the state border to Idaho to pick up a woman named Susan, who has a cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy. Susan’s physician won’t perform an abortion, even though it’s life-threatening, because there’s still a heartbeat and the law is “fuzzy”— he doesn’t want to risk losing his license.

The premise of this episode is correct insofar as according to Idaho state law performing an abortion is a criminal offence.

“(2)  Every person who performs or attempts to perform an abortion as defined in this chapter commits the crime of criminal abortion.”

This law was modelled on Texas’s Heartbeat law. Likewise, it is correct that the physician risks losing his licence if it is discovered he performs the abortion.

“Criminal abortion shall be a felony punishable by a sentence of imprisonment of no less than two (2) years and no more than (5) years in prison. The professional license of any health care professional who performs or attempts to perform an abortion or who assists in performing or attempting to perform an abortion in violation of this subsection shall be suspended by the appropriate licensing board for a minimum of six (6) months upon a first offense and shall be permanently revoked upon a subsequent offense.”

However, unlike the Grey’s Anatomy episode, the Idaho law provides for exceptions in cases where the abortion will reasonably prevent the death of the mother.

“(3)  It shall be an affirmative defense to prosecution under subsection (2) of this section and to any disciplinary action by an applicable licensing authority, which must be proven by a preponderance of the evidence, that:

(a)(i)  The abortion was performed or attempted by a physician as defined in this chapter;

(ii)  The physician determined, in his good faith medical judgment and based on the facts known to the physician at the time, that the abortion was necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman.”

That’s not “fuzzy.”

That’s very clear.

What is fuzzy is the left wing logic that concludes it’s fuzzy. Entertainment media, like this show, are the ones propagating misinformation in opposition to the overturning of Roe v Wade. Abortion is a life-saving medical intervention for women with ectopic pregnancies, so every facility in Idaho can lawfully provide it. No one would refuse a person in Susan’s precarious situation. Addison and Bailey could have performed the surgery themselves in that facility, or driven Susan to a neighbouring hospital in her own native state.

As Addison screams out, “I AM INFURIATED!”

She should be. But her hands weren’t tied by a Republican majority legislature in 2022. Her hands were tied by the false information provided to and peddled by the Grey’s Anatomy writers. Ironically, it is the left who created the confusion which misled Susan’s physician, which in turn became a direct cause of her eventual death. Her bleeding out on the side of the road after a rupture was completely preventable, were it not for the left-wing obscuring the truth about state’s abortion laws.
